The Idaho State Board of Education announced Feb. 15 that Dr. Arthur Vailas would be the next president of Idaho State University in Pocatello.
Vailas will be taking the place of Interim President Michael Gallagher July 1.
“This is a dream that I had, someday, to come to the right place, and the minute I stepped on [ISU] campus I felt this was the right place. It’s a beautiful state and a wonderful university,” Vailas said.
BYU-Idaho officials are eager to see what the new president will do. Former ISU presidents have often visited BYU-I. Jim Gee, BYU-I academic vice president, met Vailas during the interview process.
“We’re excited to see him and have him here on campus to get to know him better,” Gee said.
More than 50 applicants were reviewed before Vailas was chosen.
“This is an exciting, new chapter for Idaho State University,” said Karen McGee, a State Board member who chaired the ISU Presidential Search Advisory Committee. “The State Board is confident Dr. Vailas is the right person, at the right time for Idaho State University.”
ISU serves over 12,000 students and has nationally recognized courses in business, pharmacy and other health professions. Gee said ISU recruits on the BYU-I campus for its grad school and other programs.
“They have always treated our students well. We have a great relationship with them,” Gee said.
According to ISU’s press release, Vailas’ salary will be $260,000 per year and consistent with other state university presidents in Idaho, housing and a car also will be provided.
Vailas is married to Dr. Laura Vailas, former associate dean at the University of Houston, where Vailas also worked.
