Are you in the market for a job or internship this summer? There are over 2,400 employers in the market for you.

Y-Careers, BYU-Idaho’s job search engine has been helping students, graduates and employers get together since 2004.

As a joint venture between the four BYUs and all Utah colleges, “Y-Careers has sought to help students make the contact they need to transition into the work force,” said James Gordon, a career placement adviser at BYU-I.

“We hope to give a student the tools he or she needs to network effectively and get his or her foot in the door,” Gordon said.

Similar to other Web sites such as www.monster.com, students spend a few minutes registering their personal information and uploading their résumé.

Then students are free to search the database for jobs. There are usually between 200 to 300 openings available at any time, according to the Career Placement office.

In addition, registered students are informed of companies conducting interviews on campus this semester and provided with a calendar of events to attend.

Recently BYU has opened its database of employers, E-recruiting, to the BYU-I student body, but some students think BYU-I students still aren’t taking full advantages of the current system.

“Why would anyone need to look to Provo for jobs when we have so many up here we aren’t going after?” said Ryan Krantz, a sophomore from Idaho Falls.

“Looking for a job on the Internet isn’t usually the most efficient way to find employment,” said Gordon. “But Y-Careers helps employers and potential employees get together.”

Regardless of where you go to find a job, whether it’s Y-Careers, E-Recruitment or www.monster.com, the most important thing is that you start early and follow up frequently.
