Recently, the David O. McKay Library formed a new group called the “Library Think Tank.”
This volunteer group will enable students to influence decisions concerning the library’s operations.
“It is a great way to be involved and learn leadership. We need people to step up to the plate,” said Cortney Jones, a Junior from Moses Lake, Wash., who is doing her internship with the library.
The library may also have larger forums and they need people to help plan them.
“We are trying to find out how to get students what they want,” said Martin Raish, the library director.
Some of the issues the Library Think Tank would like to have opinions on include how the library functions.
This includes the hours and food in the library, more comfortable chairs and “why students don’t come to the library,” Jones said.
One major concern the library is addressing concerns the research databases the school pays large amounts of money for.
Through students’ opinions and e-mails acquired by the Library Think Tank, the group hopes to discover which databases are being used the most.
It also hopes to learn how to make the databases more available or easier for students to utilize.
The library is thinking about a new layout for the third floor.
But before they make such a costly decision, they want to acquire students’ opinions.
“We want to make sure everyone’s voice is heard,” Jones said.
The Library Think Tank will meet every Thursday at the library from 5 to 5:30 in room 190.
Even if students can’t be a part of the Library Think Tank, they can still e-mail their questions and ideas to Jones at pag04002@byui.edu.
You must also e-mail to become part of the Library Think Tank group.
