Romance, deception, gossip and slander are coming to BYU-Idaho. Fortunately, they’re themes in the play, School for Scandal, which starts Feb. 22.
“This play is filled with slander. Some of it good natured and some of it not,” said Hyrum Conrad, a professor in the Theater Department and director of the play.
Richard Brinsley Sheridan wrote the play in 1777, and it was first performed in London. Despite nearing its 230th birthday, this comedy of manners remains popular today.
The play starts with Lady Sneerwell and her sidekick, Snake, spreading gossip in the hopes to break up a romance between Charles Surface and Maria. Lady Sneerwell wants Charles for herself and Charles’s brother, Joseph, is in love with Maria.
The confusion continues with Maria’s guardian, who dislikes Charles, and an uncle in disguise, who comes to see his nephews in order to decide which one to leave his fortune to. Events get more and more chaotic as secrets are discovered and slander is spread around.
The play runs Feb. 22-25, 28 and March 1-4 in the Kirkham Arena Theater at 7:30 p.m.
