DISASTERS IN SPACE

Feb. 1, 2003 — The space shuttle Columbia broke up about 15 minutes before the scheduled landing. All seven crew members died.

Jan. 28, 1986 — The space shuttle Challenger was destroyed and its crew of seven died during its launch from the Kennedy Space Center.

June 30, 1971 — The bodies of three Cosmonauts were recovered from Soyuz 11 after radio contact after decent was not re-established. The men suffocated when a pressure valve malfunctioned.

April 13, 1970 — Jim Lovell stated, “Houston, we have a problem.” Two days later, the flight was declared a successful failure when Apollo 13 and crew landed safely.

April 1967 — The Russians lost a single pilot when the landing chute of Snoyuz 1 failed to open and the backup chute became tangled in the main chute.

Jan. 27, 1967 — A faulty electrical switch created a spark which ignited the pure oxygen environment on Apollo 1. Unable to deploy the hatch due to its cumbersome design and lack of breathable oxygen, the crew lost consciousness and died.
