Between all the excitement of wedding plans, one small detail is often overlooked insuring the ring.
Parr Young, a senior from Hanford, Calif., and his wife, Cassie, a senior from Alamosa, Colo., were enjoying their honeymoon in Orlando, Fla., when catastrophe hit.
“While we were out on the beach, our car was broken into and everything was stolen,” Parr said. This included credit cards, identification and the couple’s new wedding rings, one of which was custom-built.
Misfortune like this could happen to anyone, and only serves to highlight the importance of protecting your symbol of eternal commitment.
The cost of a ring is usually high, but the peace of mind may be worth the extra money.
One of the best options for newly married couples is to add jewelry to a homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy.
When asked about the cost of insuring a wedding ring, Stephanie Romney from Bell Insurance Agency in Rexburg said, “It’s completely different from person to person.”
A homeowner’s policy will usually cover theft, loss and damage. These can happen even outside the home and will still be covered by the policy.
Of course, many jewelers offer alternative options for protecting wedding rings. “You buy a ring off me, the diamond falls out, I’ll replace it for free,” said Frank Hadry of Dale’s Jewelers in Rexburg.
Other ring shops offer warranties that cover cleaning and vary in price depending on the ring bought. Theft and loss are usually not included in these, though. “I tell [students] to get renter’s insurance,” Hadry said.
Most reputable jewelers will be able to recommend insurance options to buyers.
To make sure you can get insurance, keep your original receipts and maintenance records. It is important to look after your sentimental and financial investment before it’s too late.
“We were getting insurance as soon as we got back,” Young said.
