BYU-Idaho’s bluegrass band held its fifth annual Idaho Bluegrass Night on Feb. 4 in the Snow Drama Theatre. The band was joined by another bluegrass band from BYU in Provo and several guest performers. The concert featured singing and instruments such as the fiddle, guitar, mandolin, bass and banjo.
The BYU-I students who performed were members of the Bluegrass Ensemble class, taught by Eileen Wilcox of the Music Department. The class brings together students who are interested in folk music, especially bluegrass.
The entertainers encouraged the audience to show approval by clapping along with the music.
A popular number sung by the group Viking Station was a medley of songs from the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? The favorite of the songs was “I’m a Man of Constant Sorrow” originally sung by the Soggy Bottom Boys.
The audience was treated to more than just classic bluegrass music. In between numbers, while microphones were being adjusted, members of the groups would relate anecdotes.
Drew Williams, a BYU student, joked that he seems to spend half his time trying to tune his instrument and the other half playing out of tune.
Wilcox, the host for the evening, told the audience that the Bluegrass Ensemble was the only class at BYU-I where you could fiddle around for credit.
