Snow removal stinks
Dear Editor,

The stated reason why no overnight parking is allowed in campus lots or on Rexburg city streets is snow removal.  This morning, Friday, Jan. 27, I looked at the three inches of snow covering the Snow / Romney lot and city streets and asked, “What snow removal?”

Anyone who shovels their own driveway knows the only effective way to remove snow is to do it before vehicles pack it into irremovable ice. I’m guessing this elegant thesis has never occurred to those in charge of local snow removal.

When it has snowed overnight, snowplows should always be on the road at 5 a.m. — before vehicles make their job ineffective — no matter when the projected end of the storm is. I suggest either this be done consistently or the no parking rule be revoked, that portion of taxes earmarked for snow removal be refunded and the person in charge of snow removal policy be moved to a more suitable job — say, Idaho Green Party Chairman.

Saddam a terrorist too
Dear Editor,

There are those among us who would have us believe that fighting in Iraq is a vain and foolish thing. They claim no connection between 9/11 and Baghdad, and therefore scream for our quick and hurried withdrawal. It seems as though they believe that Saddam and his sons were not, and are not, terrorists. They must have missed President Bush’s State of the Union address in 2002 where he clearly defined who would be sought after in the War on Terror.  He said, “We will make no distinction between those who are terrorists and those who harbor them.”

It is true that we have found no pictures with Saddam and Bin Laden shaking hands. This, however, does not clear Saddam Hussein from being branded a terrorist. We know that he had weapons of mass destruction because he used them on his own people. There may not be a direct connection between Saddam and 9/11, or Saddam and Bin Laden, but there most assuredly is a connection between Saddam and terrorism. When are we going start uniting around the goal of keeping America safe?

Rude test proctor
I was in the Testing Center last week, and a few minutes into the test a loud banging erupted from the front wall. I looked at the proctor, hoping she would fix the problem. She just sat there seemingly oblivious to the noise. After five minutes I said, “Excuse me, could you find out what that noise is?” The young lady appeared horrified that I was speaking to her. She slowly got up and walked towards me, bent down and said “If you don’t stop talking, I am going to take your test.” A little confused, I restated my original question. She begrudgingly said she would look into it. A few minutes later the banging stopped. The proctor treated me and every other student in there with zero respect. I hope that isn’t the Testing Center’s policy.
