Green vs. Starving Student

The Starving Student Card and the Green Card, another competitor in the bargain lover’s world, can both be found in the pockets and purses of students around campus, but are they really worth it?

The cards are a compilation of bargains contracted with local companies.

For example, when eating out at Gringo’s and using the Starving Student Card, you will receive a free fountain drink with purchase of any entrée. It may seem like a steal, but you only get this offer three times.

The Green Card offers the exact same deal. Tied in the first round.

The deals don’t end with burritos and carbonated drinks; both cards also offer a free small Blizzard from Dairy Queen with the purchase of any other size of Blizzard.

Now, they do offer some absolutely free items. The Starving Student Card has a whopping total of 47! The Green Card comes in with less than half at 23 free items. One point for the Starving Student Card.

One extra point was awarded to the Starving Student Card for offering not only a free apple crisp at the Firehouse Grill, a $4.49 value, but also five free BYU-Idaho Outdoor Resource Center rentals. Free snowshoeing and ice skating to burn off those “free” treats.

Brad Casper, a sophomore from Sandy, Utah, goes around knocking on doors, selling Green Cards. Both he and his brother sell them around town, though the owners and developers of the Green Card live in Provo, Utah.

His sales pitches include, “It is $5 cheaper!” “We have deals for five theaters!” and “The cards are very popular!”

After taking time to elaborate about the card, Casper said, “a percentage of the proceeds go to help the Huntsman Cancer Society.”

Five points for the Green Card. A portion of your $10 will go toward the research and treatment promoted by the Huntsman Cancer Society.

“I like the Green Card because it is cheaper and I think it has more stuff in Rexburg so it is all closer,” said Nicci Johnston, a junior from Amarillo, Texas. “It is stuff that I use more, and it’s mostly food.”

Both the Green Card and the Starving Student Card offer a wide variety of services in addition to food, such as automotive and health and beauty services. The difference between the two is the areas in which the services are offered.

If you are a starving student who needs a tan and has a car, the Starving Student Card might be for you; many of the offers are in Idaho Falls and surrounding areas.

If your transportation has little variation outside of tennis shoes, you may want to check out the Green Card.

Because the offers on each card vary, and both have some pretty sweet deals, there can be no winner. All points given during are now null and void.
