With snow blanketing the mountains and dusting the evergreens, many students are itching to get out and enjoy the white stuff while it lasts.

The BYU-Idaho Outdoor Resource Center offers students heading out into the great outdoors over 350 items for rent and sale.

Everything from specially designed women’s Crescent Moon snowshoes to a 300-person giant Twister mat are tucked under the north end of the stadium at the corner of 1st West and 2nd South.

The center is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Equipment for winter-specific activities the ORC carries includes sleds, cross-country skis, snow boards and snowshoes.

Besides these, the ORC also carries several items for rent that aren’t as well known, such as snow bikes, mad river rockets and air-boards.

A snow bike is basically a snowboard with bike handlebars and a seat mounted on it that can be ridden down a snowy slope.

The ORC staff recommends starting off on small inclines with it and then working up. Mad River Rockets are similar to knee boards.

Air boarding is “kind of like tubing but more extreme,” said Jory Drake, a senior from Lewisville, Idaho and ORC Staff Member. Drake goes on to explain that air-boards allow the rider to steer and go much faster than with traditional tubes.

Along with providing gear, the ORC also offers tips on how and where to use the equipment. Maps are available, and the staff is willing to offer advice and personal preferences on the best places and ways to use your rental.

For anyone looking for even more direction or help with starting their trip, the Outdoor Activities Department works with the ORC to provide transportation and leadership for group activities in the outdoors.

Schedules and times for activities can be found on the Outdoors Web site: activities.byui.edu/outdoor/ and in the Outdoor Activities Guide available at various locations across campus.
