Break dancing. Tuxedos. Disco. Vivaldi. Michael Jackson. It wouldn’t seem like these could come together in one dance concert, but on Jan. 24 and 25, they did.
FLY Dance Company, founded by Kathy Wood, performed two sold-out performances in the Kirkham Auditorium.
In 1993, Wood put hip-hop moves to classical music.
That piece was the start of the all-male contemporary dance company, FLY.
The company of five dancers comes from Houston, Texas, and has performed all over the United States and Europe.
The concert was full of surprises. There was skateboarding to music by Debussy, dancers dressed in tuxedos break dancing, and the last number was a medley of Bach, Michael Jackson and Nat King Cole.
Alene Hatch, a junior from Aurora, Colo., said her favorite part of the concert was the variety of music. “They had everything from oldies to classical to rap.”
Loud cheers, laughter and applause from the audience greeted each unexpected twist.
Besides encouraging people to clap, scream and whistle when they approved of something, FLY also got the audience up and dancing.
Terry Gorton, a professor in the BYU-Idaho English Department, took his wife and two daughters to the concert.
“It had us all laughing,” Gorton said.
Gorton said he and his family enjoyed it, but next time they’d bring earplugs.
After the concert, Gorton’s 4-year-old daughter, Nikki, told her mom, “I found out my head is allergic to screaming.”
Gorton’s wife had to take Carli, 7, out during the second half because the noise gave Carli a headache.
“I could have made a fortune that night selling earplugs during intermission,” Gorton said.
But in spite of the noise, Gorton said his daughters still loved the concert.
Chelsey Chapman, a junior from Rexburg, liked the dancers’ moves. “It takes control to do those moves and stay for as long as they did,” she said.
Matt Roberts, a junior from Fairfax, Va., said he wished they’d done more break dancing. “But I liked how the dancing was more masculine. The concert was great and very creative,” he said.
At the end, George Casco, a member of FLY, told the audience they’d been a great crowd and the group met fans in the lobby afterward to sign autographs.
