A Superman poster on an apartment wall. A daily planner with pictures of The O.C. cast. A shelf lined with all 10 seasons of Friends on DVD. These memorabilia suggest there are many dedicated television fans at BYU-Idaho.

So what are students at BYU-I watching?

Lori Nielsen, a sophomore from Sugar Field, Texas, watches Grey’s Anatomy, a show about several interns competing to be a surgeon at a hospital. Nielson’s favorite character is Meredith.

“She’s determined and smart,” said Nielson. “She has heart and feeling.”

To prepare to watch Grey’s Anatomy, “[I] Turn off the lights, pop some popcorn, and [have] someone to cuddle up with,” Nielson said.

Steven Thomas, a sophomore from Raymond, Miss., likes Grey’s Anatomy “because it is real life [but] funnier.” Steve prepares to watch the show every Sunday with Nielson.

Lost, a show about a group of people who are stranded on an island because of a plane crash, is a hit with Amber Anglesey, a sophomore from American Falls, Idaho, and her roommates.

“It’s got suspense,” Anglesey said.

Another suspenseful show that has students hooked is 24. This show is about Counter Terrorist Unit agent Jack Bauer dealing with the rescue of a presidential candidate from an assassination plot and his daughter’s kidnapping in 24 hours. To complicate matters, there is a mole inside the agency.

“It’s addictive and keeps you guessing,” said Steven Liebing, a freshman from Pasco, Wash.

Melissa Chord, a freshman from Anacortes, Wash., claims loyalty to Gilmore Girls. This show is about an unusually close friendship between mother and daughter (Lorelei and Rory Gilmore) who live in Stars Hollow, Conn.

“It’s just a really funny show,” Chord said. “I love [Lorelei’s] jokes.”

Some shows are just so good and addictive that students literally stay up ‘til three or four o’clock in the morning to watch the whole season of a favorite show, like Hannah Hopkin, a senior from Rexburg, did to watch Smallville, a prequel to the Superman.

Other students sacrifice things other than sleep. Lizzie Marchant, a freshman from West Bloom Field, Mich., skipped a dodgeball game to watch a show about a group of teens who live in Orange County, Calif., known as The O.C.

There is a diverse selection of shows students are watching. Some prefer not to let too many others know what they like to watch. Others love their shows so much they share the experience with others and get them hooked as well.
