This winter, the BYU-Idaho Athletics Department decided to try something new. In addition to the winter sports offered this semester, cross-country skiing was added into the mix. This athletic innovation, however, was short lived.
To get the skis gliding, the program needed thirty people to participate, including student coaches. Unfortunately for those eager to take part, only half that many people showed up for tryouts.
Most of those who were interested in hitting the cross-country ski trails were new to the sport. Anna Puzey, a junior from Hermiston, Ore., who has never been cross-country skiing in her life, said she was trying out simply because she “thought it would be fun.” Anna was one of about 15 students who attended the meeting last week. Steveo Turner, a junior from Raymond, Alberta, was also there. “I went cross-country skiing last week and liked it,” Turner said. This inspired him to try out for the program.
One of the difficulties most of these students faced was the impending ski schedule. Coach Doug Stutz, manager of the cross-country skiing program, said the skiers would have practices five days a week from 3:30-5 p.m., not to mention the meets on the weekends.
Many of the students worried that their class schedules would conflict with this schedule and would limit their ability to join the team. The main reason for canceling the program, however, was simply the lack of numbers.
But for all of you cross-country skiing fans, don’t give up yet! Coach Stutz said that although it won’t be added to the Athletics program, cross-country skiing will soon become part of the Outdoor Activities program.
As part of this program, Outdoor Activities will have a couple of weekend competitions during the semester. For those interested in hitting the ski trails, visit the Outdoor Activities Web site at activities.byui.edu/outdoor.
