Long scarves, snow boots, bulky jackets winter is coming fast. Are you prepared for this year’s snowy conditions?
Each year, students arrive at BYU-Idaho from across the country, including Idaho, but not all are prepared for Rexburg’s freezing winter weather.
“I’m used to the cold here, [but] the most annoying thing in winter is the wind,” said Lacey Archibald, a junior from Idaho Falls. “It’s chilly and biting, making the temperature colder.”
So how do students stay warm without looking like giant marshmallows wearing layers of puffy coats?
“I like fashionable sweaters,” Archibald said. “A scarf is a must; [so are] gloves and nice shoes so that [your] socks don’t get wet.”
Shoes for keeping feet warm ard dry are important, but they can be an essential for another reason.
“Good traction shoes are the most important!” said Brooke Parks, a senior from Rexburg. “No matter what, you are going to slip on ice and fall, but with great traction shoes you’ll fall less.”
One type of footwear boots, are usually in style during the winter, providing not only traction and fewer slips on the ice, but warmth as well. Look for moccasin-style boots with fur on them as a ‘hott’ item this winter.
Another article of clothing that commonly in style during the winter and essential for Rexburg’s frosty season is a coat.
One thing Parks said she is sure to have every winter is her leather jacket.
“[It’s] lined with fur on the inside,” she said. “The collar also flips up to protect my face from the wind.”
Leather and quilted jackets, pea or wool coats and trench coats are all great for keeping the cold at bay.
However, wearing a coat is not the only smart idea for winter attire; adding the right accessories, such as a hat, scarf or pair of gloves also increases your chances of staying warm, and can sometimes make you look more fashionable.
