It seems as though two Heismans don’t necessarily make a right.
For the first time in NCAA football history, two Heisman trophy winners suited up together on the same team for the same game the 2006 Rose Bowl.
Senior quarterback Matt Leinart, the 2004 Heisman winner, and junior running back Reggie Bush, the 2005 winner, were to lead the #1 ranked University of Southern California Trojans against the #2 ranked University of Texas Longhorns.
However, on Jan. 4, all the Longhorns needed was this year’s Heisman runner-up, a 6-foot-5-inch quarterback from Houston, Texas, to snap USC’s 34-game winning streak and win the 2006 Rose Bowl and NCAA National Championship with a score of 41-38.
Junior quarterback Vince Young, who reprised his role as Rose Bowl MVP, passing for 267 yards and running for another 200, led Texas to their first national championship in 35 years. His 467 total yards were a Rose Bowl record.
The game seemingly lived up to its four-month hype as USC built a 12-point lead with a little more than six and a half minutes remaining.
However, after five lead changes Young led two late-game touchdown drives and ran in a two-point conversion to give Texas the lead with 19 seconds remaining.
In a championship game advertised greatly for Southern Cal’s offensive prowess and dominance, it was Texas’ offense that proved to be the kryptonite to the USC super power.
On fourth-and-two with 19 seconds remaining, Young scrambled untouched for the game-winning touchdown, gaining a victory that capped off, arguably, one of the greatest championship games in college football history and an ended any talk of a USC three-peat.
