It’s that time of the year when families come together and don’t just sit in front of the fire but also sit by the television to watch movies.

While most families do not spend their entire Christmas vacation in front of the television, watching movies during this special holiday season has become a highly practiced tradition.

“My favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas,” said Erin Eppich, a junior from Alpine, Utah. “My family and I watch it every year when we set up the Christmas tree; it’s tradition and reminds me of all the good times I’ve had with my family.”

Starring Bing Crosby as Bob Wallace and Danny Kaye as Phil Davis, the 1954 film White Christmas combines song and dance acts to tell a story of coincidence and romantic mix-ups.

After leaving the Army at the end of WWII, Wallace and Davis unite to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis soon becomes a matchmaker and introduces Wallace to a pair of beautiful sisters (Betty and Judy) who also have a song-and-dance act.

When Betty and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to find their former commander, General Waverly, is the lodge owner.

White Christmas ranks number four on a list found on www.wanderlist.com, which compiles the top 24 Christmas movies of all time.

Ranked number one is the beloved 1946 classic, It’s a Wonderful Life, starring Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey. As George contemplates suicide, a guardian angel named Clarence comes to his rescue. In a flashback, Clarence shows George what his town would have been like if he were not alive.

“I love [It’s a Wonderful Life],” said Katie Gleed, a junior from Federal Way, Wash.

One Christmas Eve, Gleed’s father received It’s a Wonderful Life, and the family watched it together. It was the last Christmas they spent together before Gleed’s sister got married.

“It caught me off guard how good it was,” Gleed said. Following close behind It’s a Wonderful Life is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and The Christmas Story.

Other movies on the list are Miracle on 34th Street, The Polar Express, How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey, The Santa Clause and Home Alone, the ever-popular film which jump-started Macaulay Culkin’s career in the 1990s.
