The swimmers and crowd were unified at the all-comers swim meet when faculty, students and team swimmers competed against each other. Motivated by a desire to be competitively festive, swimmers did everything from double-gainer diving and flipper wearing to cross-dressing.
“In athletics we try to involve as many people as we can, this way people who aren’t involved in athletics can see how much fun were having and what the events are all about,” said Jackie Johnson, a junior from Sierra Vista, Ariz., and the student coordinator for the event.
The all-comers meet consisted of individual and team races, in addition to a free-for-all dive competition where the belly flop contest was the highlight.
Swimmers enjoyed the freedom to make their own teams and relax from the rigors of intramural competition.
Tera Solesbee, a freshman from Anaheim, Calif., and winner in the 200-medley relay, enjoyed beating the competition with her own custom-designed dream team.
“We tried to take the people with the fastest times in each event.” Solesbee said he especially enjoyed winning the T-shirt, which was awarded to all first place participants.
Swimmers were not the only ones entertained; spectators were surprised at the new cross-dressing swimwear.
“You know, I’ve been swimming for four years in high school, and I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Mike Sorenson, a freshman from Lake Stevens, Wash.
Johnson summed up the event in three words: “chaotic, spontaneous, and diverse.”
