After 26 years of business, the Rexburg Sports and Fitness Club has decided to close its doors due to a deal to Pinnacle Security, who will now take over the fitness building.

The owners of the fitness club sealed the deal the first week of November, handing all of their facilities to Pinnacle.

“We’ve never made money,” said co-owner Gordon Thatcher in an interview with the Rexburg Standard Journal.

“It’s always been the other way,” Thatcher said.

“There’ve been some rough times. This was a corporation, and we as the owners personally paid all the debts. We got to the point [where] we couldn’t pay all the bills. ... It’s been a rough go over the years, but we’ve kept it going,” Thatcher said.

Owners tried to get the city to help them to keep the building running, but to no avail.

“I have mixed feelings about them closing,” said Tiffany Andrew, a Rexburg resident.

“I don’t blame the owners for doing it,” Andrew said.

The fitness club had one of the only two indoor pools in the city. The other one is owned by BYU-Idaho. The club owners said those who have paid for memberships can continue their membership at World Gym Rexburg, on 125 Valley River Dr., which does not have a pool for members.

The pool may be opened for public or civic use, but Pinnacle Security has not determined how much it will cost, said Pinnacle owner Jared Chappell in an interview with the Standard Journal.

Some repairs will be necessary before the pool can open for the public, Chappell said.
