Want to get involved in the community by taking friends, roommates, or home evening group on a service activity? The service database at is the place to look.

“It is more or less a place where students can look if they want to do service projects for Home Evening or even if they just want to find service in the community,” said, Melanie McCracken, an Outreach Committee member and a freshman from Highland, Utah.

The service database is only a few clicks away from the BYU-Idaho home page. It benefits not only those looking for service but also those who need it.

“It is a database where different groups or even groups in the community that need service can have it posted,” said Outreach Committee member, Darren Litchfield, a senior from Redmond, Wash.

“Whenever they have fresh information, they can post that as well,” he said. “It is the perfect opportunity for Home Evening groups to find any type of service they can do, or even any other group that wants to do service activities.”

Litchfield, a communication major, received an e-mail from another service group, and through researching came across the Service Database. He now spends several hours a week working on the database.

“It counted as a practicum, which I needed, so I interviewed for it and got it. On average, depending on the week, I spend three to four hours, sometimes maybe even five to six,” Litchfield said.

To get to the service database, go to web.byui.edu/lsi/ResponsibilityStatement.asp.

“The service database is there for students to get involved. Each business name is listed on the service database with the dates that they need a project done,” said Outreach Committee in service-activities chair, Talise Dubois, a junior from Maple Grove, Minn.

The database also gives the option to post service opportunities. Service-Activities advisor Sean Tippetts said anyone can post service activities they need done. New information is posted as soon as it comes.

Critical things to include when posting are dates, times, type of activity, who to contact for more information and how many people are needed to complete the activity.

“The very best way that someone can go about posting service activities is to e-mail me at tippettss@byui.edu. What has to be understood is that not all postings get a response. We love to post, we direct people to the Web site, we advertise for the site, but we can’t guarantee that all postings will get a response. However, oftentimes they will.”

The Service Database is a great way to spend time with friends while doing something worthwhile to make a difference.
