A new society invites students to come and develop the qualities of Newel K. Whitney. It invites all students “who are willing to come to become: to act and not be acted upon,” said Scott Bird, president of the Newel K. Whitney Society and a senior from Layton, Utah.

The purpose of the new society is to help students “develop these attributes and succeed both temporally and spiritually, as did Newel K. Whitney,” Bird said.

The attributes Bird is talking about are faith, integrity, industry and innovation, which are taken from Whitney’s life.

“Newel K. Whitney was chosen as our trademark because of his strong entrepreneurial skills and integrity,” said Andrea Lund, vice president of internal affairs and a junior from Logan, Utah.

Students can be involved in several areas including competition, entrepreneurship, training and development, mentoring, internal affairs and communications. Through these areas, students will be able to learn skills that will help them to become more useful in today’s workforce.

“Students will have the opportunity of having another student as a mentor for them as well as an employer in their desired industry assigned to mentor them on their ladder to success,” Bird said.

“Newel K. Whitney was true to the prophet and never faltered. We want to help students develop the skills needed and the knowledge needed to help students never falter both spiritually and temporally,” Bird said.

The society was formed through the college of Business and Communications, however it is open to all students.

The Inaugural Assembly was held Nov. 10 in the Kirkham Auditorium. President Kim B. Clark spoke about leadership skills needed in today’s workplace.
