Ah, Thanksgiving — the time for food, friends and family. But for some students at BYU-Idaho, going home just isn’t an option. If you are one of these students, there are plenty of activities around the valley to keep you busy, no matter what you like to do.

Find a Flick: Pride and Prejudice comes out Nov. 11, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire hits theaters Nov. 18, as well as Yours, Mine and Ours, a comedy about a blended family of 18 kids, opens Nov. 23. For those who would rather rent a movie, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving will get you into the holiday spirit, Garfield’s Thanksgiving plots the cat’s antics to escape his new diet, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a comedy about trying to get home in time for Thanksgiving.

See the Light: Rexburg’s Hometown Festival of Lights will take place Nov. 25, as well as the Town Square Lighting Ceremony in Jackson Hole, Wyo., both begin at 6 p.m.

Hit the Slopes: Grand Targhee and Kelly Canyon are close by and offer plenty for skiers and snowboarders. For cross country skiers, the Yellowstone Ski Festival begins Nov. 21 - 27 in West Yellowstone, Mont. Harriman State Park also offers many trails for cross country skiing.

Serve your neighbor: You can go to the nursing homes and assisted living centers in the area and make someone’s holiday a little brighter. You can also serve at community Thanksgiving dinners or nearby soup kitchens.

Pilgrim Pride: Research the history of Thanksgiving and learn a little bit more about the Pilgrims and their traditions. Make bonnets or top hats out of paper and practice Puritan lingo. Take a picture and impress your friends with your originality.

Get Creative: Decorate your room with handprint turkeys, make an Indian headdress with feathers and construct a cornucopia you can fill with candy, fruit and vegetables.

Count Your Blessings: Even if you can’t be with your family, there are ways to be close to them. Call them, write an e-mail or a letter or send them a care package. Above all, remember what you have to be thankful for.
