Beta Gamma Psi, BYU-Idaho’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, inducted new members last Thursday night.
President Kim B. Clark spoke to the 107 inductees and counseled them to always have a love of learning. “We are born to learn,” Clark said. He then congratulated students and gave them a charge to live worthy of the companionship of the Holy Ghost.
“The induction has helped me to realize that BYU-I has students with incredible potential, and it is a pleasure to associate with people like this,” said Derence Walk, president of the Beta Gamma Psi chapter and a senior from Walla Walla, Wash.
One new inductee, Stephen Smith, a junior from Menasha Wis., said that President Clark’s speech helped inspire students there to not just learn, but love learning. “You just want to learn for the sake of learning,” Smith said.
The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage scholarship among associate degree students.
The honor society provides and encourages leadership and service opportunities. There are also many scholarship opportunities available to Phi Theta Kappa’s members.
Walk’s catchphrase and personal mission for the Beta Gamma Psi chapter is, “Use the gifts that God gives us to make a difference, and bless the lives of others.”
