FROGZ a hit with kids

Life-size frogs. A dancing paper bag. Penguins playing musical chairs.

No, this is not one of those weird dreams.

It is Imago Theater’s presentation of FROGZ, which was performed on Nov. 2 and 3 in the Kirkham Auditorium.

The show opened with three human-size smooth, green frogs squatting on stage, staring at the audience. Several silent minutes passed before one of them finally twitched, sending a roar of laughter through the audience.

“My favorite part was when the frogs piled up on one another and looked at each other,” said Spencer Johnson, age 8, from Rexburg.

The simplicity of the characters’ movements kept the audience laughing.

A giant paper bag added humor as well. After rolling and hopping around stage, cat meows muttered from inside, soon followed by pawing on the bag and a tail emerging from the opening. No one let the cat out of the bag, though.

“I liked how they were able to tell a story and illustrate things, without words, using only sound effects and actions,” said Logan Hobley, a freshman from Clearfield, Utah. “They were really good at communicating with their bodies.”

The Imago Theater from Portland, Oregon performs experimental contemporary works, such as the creature-theater presented in FROGZ.
