Nine candidates are running for three positions on the Rexburg City Council in the Nov. 8 city election.
Also on the ballot will be a measure to increase the cities property tax levy by $950,000 annually.
Incumbent Nyle C. Fullmer and appointed member Irma Anderson are seeking to retain their seats. The other contested seat was occupied by former Council President Paul Pugmire, who resigned August 31.
The council consists of six members who are elected at large to four-year terms on the bi-partisan council.
Council members manage operations of the city and allocate public funds under the supervision of the mayor, according to Idaho statues.
Voters will also be deciding on a $950,000 property tax increase for road repairs and construction. The city held its fourth town meeting explaining the reasons for the proposed increase last week.
“People who attend the meetings learn two things,” said Rexburg Mayor Shawn Larsen.
“One, they learn more about the issue that they didn’t know before. Second, they realize something needs to be done,” Larsen said.
Students can register to vote on Election Day in MC 272. Students need a picture ID and proof they have lived in Rexburg for at least 30 days, said Blair Kay, Rexburg City Clerk.
Registering to vote in Idaho makes students legal residents of the state.
There is no penalty for changing state of residency in order to vote; however, Ken Jackson, BYU-Idaho Financial Aid administrator, cautions students there may be a small impact on Pell grant awards.
