A small panel of student judges sat at a table in the Manwaring Center Friday at noon, ready to judge the Biggest Belt Buckles Competition.

“For all those people who have never won a contest, here’s your chance!” said Dan Kennedy, a sophomore from Portland, Ore., to passing students.

Slowly students approached the table to register their belt buckles. The contestants wrote down their name, e-mail address and the size of their buckle.

At 2 p.m. the contest ended and the judges made their decisions.

The biggest belt buckle award went to Michael Sleeman, a freshmen from Hockley, Texas. His buckle had a Texas flag, a United States Flag, the Texas star and said “The State of Texas.”

Danny Nelson, a senior from Gig Harbor Wash., won the judges’ choice award with his Shamrock buckle.

Walter Durfee, a junior from Almo, Idaho, won most unique with his homemade lion belt buckle.

The competition was held in conjunction with Nashville Nights. Sleeman won free tickets to the event for his whole apartment, and Durfee and Nelson both won a free ticket.
