Department chair changes for Public Services in the David O. McKay Library and the English department are now official.
Shane Cole has taken over from Sam Nielson as Public Services department chair. The change was made Oct. 15.
The English department chair will change Jan. 1, when Karen Holt will fill the position now held by Kip Hartvigsen.
“These individuals were chosen based on the confidence of their fellow department members,” said Phil Packer, associate academic vice president of instruction at BYU-Idaho. “The people we have chosen are people of integrity, ability and good judgment.”
Holt praised Harvigsen’s leadership during the transition to a four-year school.
“His capable leadership has contributed significantly to the quality of education for all students,” said Holt.
Packer added, “Both department chairs have been really great. We’re very pleased with and grateful to the people who have served.”
When teachers become department chairs they still teach but take on greater administrative roles, Packer said.
As department chair, they oversee class scheduling and coordinate academic programs.
The position of department chair is based on invitation and is alternated periodically between faculty members in the department. “Department chairs are largely responsible for the quality of our academic programs,” Packer said.
“My focus will be to serve students and my colleagues so we can provide a quality educational experience for all students in all semesters,” Holt said.
