Many remember Gabrielle Union as “that mean cheerleader” in the 2000 film Bring it On. And whether she’s throwing a pom-pom, a sassy look or a basketball, Union continues to prove herself as a talented young actress.
Union originally planned to attend law school, according to www.people.com, but after three years at UCLA, Union scored an internship at a modeling agency and was often mistaken for a model herself. Her role as an intern opened the door to a flourishing modeling and acting career.
“I didn’t want to act,” Union told E! Online. “[But] when my internship ended, they said, ‘We’d be interested in representing you.’ I was like, ‘If you think someone will pay me to be cheesy, sure, whatever!’”
Cheesy? Perhaps. But Union used her cheesier roles as a springboard to more credible ones. Her earliest acting projects included small roles on television shows such as 7th Heaven, but it was her more significant role on the short-lived CBS drama City of Angels that helped her gain recognition.
She was boosted in the limelight with her roles in She’s All That, Bring it On, and 10 Things I Hate About You.
As her acting resume lengthened, Union scored more serious roles in non-teen movies Abandon, Welcome to Colinwood and Bad Boys II. Union continues to take on larger, more serious roles in movies and television and is married to Chris Howard, a professional football player for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
