Broadway Review, a montage of musical numbers, was performed by students Friday night in the Kirkham Auditorium.

Students picked their favorite numbers from musicals such as The Sound of Music, Phantom of the Opera, Suessical the Musical and Wicked to sing for a nearly full audience.

“There were some really great [performances]. I liked the whole interaction ones,” said audience member, April Layton, a sophomore from Shelly, Idaho.

Performers dressed in full costume for their characters and acted out scenes from their shows. Emily Pun and Crystal Choy, both seniors from Hong Kong, performed their modern version of “The Step Sister’s Lament” from Cinderella, singing and dancing around silent actors who played Cinderella and the prince.

“It’s not just hearing a song, your knowing a part of the musical and sing to them,” Pun said.

Performers got a chance not only to sing but interact with the audience as they threw themselves in the spirit of Broadway.

Jared Davis, a junior from Oakley, Idaho, who sang “You Can’t Take That Away From Me” from Crazy for You, pulled a female out of the audience to serenade. Natasha Hurlbut, a sophomore from Moore, Okla., rushed the stage in the middle of the performances and did an impromptu song and dance from Meet Me in Saint Louie.

For one night only, Broadway came to Rexburg with the sounds of musicals, and left the audience in high sprits and humming their favorite songs.

“We don’t have anything like this on campus, and I know for me personally, I wasn’t really that interested in Broadway music, but after doing this, it’s brought out a whole new side in me!” said Erin Cozean, a senior from Seattle, Wash., and one of the student show organizers.
