College students are gaining knowledge for their futures but do not always know how to land that first job.
Knowing how to fill out a résumé is a skill anyone looking for a job needs to know how to do.
“I had a required class in high school ... on how to write good résumés,” said Hannah Grawe, a freshman from Minneapolis, Minn. “You couldn’t pass high school unless you passed the class.”
Some high schools offer a course that provides help to college students preparing to fill out résumés. Some students are forced to learn on their own.
“Writing a résumé is intimidating for everyone, so don’t worry, you’re not alone. What makes it difficult is knowing what to include, what not to, what to highlight, what to de-emphasize,” according to www.resumehelp.org.
Many students who don’t know how to write résumés have the Internet as a good resource to help them along. There are many good sites available. Another good resource is asking someone who has written a résumé to help.
“I felt fine when writing a résumé. I just would have someone read it over. It made me feel better,” said Steve Herrick a junior from Olympia, Wash.
Most résumés will be a page in length. Telling strengths are an important part of writing a résumé. There will be many applicants for the job be sure to state the strengths so the employer will know what there is to offer, according to www.resumehelp.org.
After writing a résumé, it is a good idea to keep one on file. You never know when you need to find a job, Herrick said.
