President Clark Offically Installed

At his inauguration Oct. 11, President Kim B. Clark addressed those present with a plan of change and innovation for the future of BYU-Idaho in the form of three imperatives for its success:

1. To raise substantially the quality of every aspect of the experience our students have.

2. To make a BYU-Idaho education

available to many more of the young people of the Church.

3. To lower the relative cost of education.

Faculty
“Students need to be teaching students more. We really need to be working on that. There are ways we can share BYU-I with the youth of the Church throughout the world by being creative and innovative — the Internet’s free! I’m just excited and glad to be a part of it.”

Lori Woodland, religion professor

“It was specific, to the point, visionary, exciting … I’m looking forward to see how faculty can play a role in his [President Clark’s] visionary ideas.”

Ward Hicks, communication professor

“I think they’re wonderful goals, lofty goals. On the first one, I thought if we see this as only as a faculty/staff responsibility we’re missing the most important thing: the student responsibility. We can’t do number one unless the students step up to the plate in a little different way. We can’t do this alone. It can’t be one-sided — faculty, staff and the university. The students need to be willing to dig deeper and reach deeper.”

Gary Marshall, history, pol. sci. and geography professor

Students

“I think it’s remarkable that we’re incorporating ideas and philosophies that no other university has endeavored to utilize before. I enjoy this because it illustrates that we’re receptive to change and progression.”

Jessica Steimer, a sophomore from Tucson, Ariz.

“The goal for efficiency forces the students and teachers to sacrifice more, which will bring more spirit to the school. What can be better than that?”

Ryan Jeppson, a freshman from Sugar City, Idaho.

“Now that President Bednar built this boat of curious workmanship, I’m excited to see President Clark command it.”

Brandon Kuhns, a sophomore from Oshkosh, Wis.

“I am very excited to see President Clark’s vision ... fulfilled. I look forward to the improvements that he sees and to the ways in which I can help in fulfilling his vision.”

Travis Nichols, a sophomore from Idaho Falls.

“I feel like the presidents of this university have been here for certain purposes and seasons. I know our education is going to take a change and a turn for the better.”

Desee Chamberlin, a senior from Ontario, Ore.

“The inauguration was a spectacular presentation of faith; undoubtedly President Clark has been chosen by the Lord to lead this university to become a more academically sound institution, and (as Elder Bednar once said) a true disciple training center where we can come closer to the Lord on a daily basis.”

Nick Gubler, a sophomore from Marysville, Wash.
