Affection on campus is “A-OK”

The other day I was strolling along, happily minding my own business, when out of the corner of my eye I saw them: two freshmen in love.

They sat on the grass as the wind blew violently and held each other close, as if holding on to one another would prevent their being blown away.

As I wondered why they would be sitting on the grass on such a gloomy, windy day, they showed me why, with an action all too common on this campus: PDA. Yes sirree, a bona fide public display of affection. They smooched, locked lips, grabbed some sugar, whatever you call it; they were kissing in public.

PDA is everywhere these days, and it’s held our school in its grasp for years. Hand holding, kissing and cuddling are found in every apartment, every campus building and every bench in the gardens.

I remember the days when people wouldn’t be caught dead showing the world that they enjoyed the company of the opposite sex, but then I graduated to the first grade.

I think that was about the time I noticed that my dad would come home and kiss my mom—in front of us! The nerve of some people!

When I saw those two freshmen kissing on the grass, I walked right up to the couple and gave them a piece of my mind. I tapped the guy on the shoulder and gave him a hearty, “Way to go, buddy! Keep it up!” OK, so I didn’t say that, but I would have if I weren’t already late for my next class. Everyone else walking with me, however, looked like they wanted to punch the two.

The fact of the matter is that PDA is A-OK, as long as it’s kept pretty clean. A close and secure relationship that is built on the foundation of trust and love will include displays of affection, public or private. When these displays of affection come in public view instead of someone’s car or an empty apartment, there’s very little chance that things will get out of hand. Besides, who wouldn’t enjoy a little more love in their life? There’s no reason for we single folk to get bitter when someone else gets some lovin’.

This school was designed as a place where Mormon kids can meet other Mormon kids, get married and have more Mormon kids. These freshmen were just doing their job.

So, next time you see that nameless couple kissing on the way to your next class, just smile a great big smile. Your day will come soon enough.
