Preparations are underway for this year’s Miss BYU-Idaho pageant, with 10 contestants competing for the title Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m.

The program is sponsored by Activities for Women Students.

“The [pageant] highlights the talents and individuality of the women of BYU-Idaho and helps them grow physically, mentally and spiritually,” said Janelle Johnson, AWS student director and a senior from Dayton, Idaho.

This year’s pageant theme, “Seize the Day,” comes from the musical Newsies. The program’s opening number will be performed by contestants to a song from the movie, entitled “Seize the Day.”

“[It] portrays the idea that our campus is a campus of [action],” said Melissa Moses, AWS pageant coordinator and a senior from Blackfoot, Idaho.

To win the title contestants will have to interview with program judges, perform a live talent, demonstrate good poise, answer an impromptu question and write an essay. Contestant Temala Baker, a junior from Jonesborough, Tenn., said she decided to try out because she thought it would be fun.

“It’s a chance to come and share your talents for a night,” she said. “It’s not an opportunity you get all the time.”
