Rexburg has seen its share of floods, earthquakes, droughts and crippling winter storms.  No matter the disaster, officials in Madison County are prepared for just about anything.

Officials in the county meet monthly as part of the Local Emergency Planning Committee to discuss emergency plans.

“We have a plan in place to start an emergency center,” said Madison County Sheriff Roy Klingler. “We could have the county evacuated within 12 to 24 hours.”

There are some basic things students can do to prepare themselves for an emergency situation.

“Sit and think for a minute and plan for all different scenarios. We never know when and we never know where,” Klingler said.

He suggested students should have a plan of who is going to be their first contact and have them contact everyone else so they don’t have to.

The most important things students can do are to listen and to obey what officials tell them.

“There will be guidance from university leaders, and city and county officials; students just need to listen. They will be given all the guidance they need,” Klingler said.

Klingler also recommended having a personal 72-hour kit and some extra cash in case of evacuation.
