Six construction workers for the John W. Clarke Building got a little piece of the culinary arts here on campus at Café Déjeuner last Wednesday, Sept. 28. It was also on the house, with thanks, from the Home and Family Education Department.
Jeff Bass, Dennis Sucher, Clark Speirs, James Smith, Mike Larsen and Kyle Jensen all got treated to a buffet from India, with all of the spices included, for their work of the past few months on the Clarke Building.
“They’ve smelled us fixing food up here,” Jeff Hamblin, faculty advisor of the Café, said. “We thought we’d invite them to dinner.”
Apparently the invitation wasn’t expected, but the workers were pleasantly surprised and grateful.
“We really appreciate Jeff inviting us up here,” Bass said to mutual nods around the table.
“Beats a sandwich, I know that,” Smith said, and everyone else agreed with him.
Even while they were enjoying their lunch, talk of construction filled the silence between the six. Sucher answered a cell phone call about things that still need to be finished.
“Hasn’t been all that long ago we got the kitchen up and running,” Sucher said.
Most of the construction should be done this week on the Clarke Building, but there are a few longer items that will take until October, Bass said.
And they might be back to the Café during that time, if they have their way.
“Maybe we’ll come up here when we have more time,” Bass said. “Of course, then we’ll have to pay for it.”
