Exploring the option of theater is one of diversity, culture and a hands-on learning process that is open to the entire student body despite their major.
“Theater is a learning medium, but it is also an entertainment medium, and so we try to balance those two,” said Susan Whitfield, Theater Department head.
A unique aspect of the Theater Department is the opportunity for students to be involved in theater as an activity program as well as a major. As a major the Theater Department currently offers only teaching degrees. To those interested in non-teaching areas, students can look into University Studies and work with advisers to help choose classes that will give them the appropriate emphasis and practicum in Theater Arts or Technical Theater, that can prepare students to go on to extended learning. The Theater Department also produces an average of six shows in a calendar year, or two shows a semester for students on every track.
As an activity program, students can become involved in Theater Council which offers students the opportunity to work in student produced, written and directed plays, at a level that is comfortable for them. For those interested, the Theater Council meets every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. in Eliza R. Snow Center for the Performing Arts, room 20.
“It’s not just a performance group. It’s not just an academic group... It’s a great way to become involved in the arts, but also control your commitment to it,” said Richard Clifford, Theater Council faculty adviser.
Both as an activity program and major, the Theater Department and Theater Council need all types of people to help make a production.
“Theater is the place where all disciplines come together; it’s about history, culture and it incorporates technology and language. Theater is where you take all these disciples and bring them all together,” said Jared Deveraux, a junior from Ravensdale Wash.
