There is a new class on campus and it is designed to help business majors learn more about the fields they will be working in.
Business 279 is a one-credit course that meets once a week. It provides the opportunity for students to learn from guest speakers as well as learn about job finding skills and networking. It is required for all business management majors.
The class will use a variety of learning opportunities to help students learn about business.
According to the course syllabus, “This course will assist you in preparing for a career in business. This course will consist primarily of a weekly one-hour presentation by successful entrepreneurs, businesspersons and faculty … you will also be instructed on résumés, job interviews, networking and career development.”
Ryan J. Williams, Business Department professor, teaches the class. Williams said the class will bring in speakers who will talk about what is needed to be successful in particular fields of work.
The speakers will be able to show the students what it is like to work in a particular field. They are professionals who have a lot of experience in their field of work.
“It’s a good opportunity to network and meet people in the business world,” said David King, a senior from Provo, Utah, and a student in the class.
Mike Miller, a junior from Rexburg, said he really enjoys the class. He said he is learning about realistic business skills and how to apply what he has learned in other classes.
Williams said the class is intended for sophomores. It will help students to understand their options early, so they can know if they like a particular field before they become seniors.
“I believe that success is a choice,” said Dick Broulim, president and CEO of Broulim’s, when talking to the students Friday.
Broulim talked about some of the things students will need to know before entering the business world.
Broulim was the first speaker the class had. Future speakers include Lance Jenson, contact center manager at Dell Computer; Craig Tingey, director of talent and recruiting at Ingersoll Rand; Scott Haws, a news anchor for KSL TV and many more.
