Now Mickey Mouse enthusiasts can go to “the most magical place on earth” in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Disneyland opened for business on Sept. 12. Hong Kong, one of the world’s most populated areas, is accustomed to a lot of people, but it is the hope of Hong Kong’s leaders that Mickey Mouse’s presence will flourish among those who didn’t necessarily grow up with Mickey, Goofy and Donald Duck.
With hopes of their own, Disney executives would like to see Hong Kong Disneyland evolve into Asia’s favorite family vacation hot spot.
There are differences, however, between the Disneyland most Americans know and love and the Hong Kong theme park.
According to Hong Kong Disneyland’s official website at park.hongkongdisneyland.com, Hong Kong Disneyland is smaller and sits on approximately 100 acres. There are two hotels: Disney’s Hollywood Hotel and Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, which make up 310 acres when combined with the park.
Space Mountain, one of the most popular attractions present at all Disney themed parks, can be experienced in Hong Kong, but it is the only high-speed ride available.
Popular rides found at other Disney parks such as Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion are missing from Hong Kong. Instead, the park focuses more on the portrayal of Disney characters and the entertainment they can provide.
Eventual expansion on a remaining 500 acres is in the works. Construction is already underway to bring Autopia to Hong Kong Disneyland. It is a new Tomorrowland attraction where guests can drive electric cars along highways of tomorrow. It will open in 2006.
