As the new school year begins, some students may find themselves suffering from an acute case of “don’t-know-what-to-do-with-all-of-the-time-that-they-suddenly-have-itis.”

This pseudo-medical condition has been known to affect people who previously had not visited the southeastern Idaho area.

These students may find themselves at the John W. Hart Building, playing basketball to fill in some of the holes in their daily schedule.

“[I come] whenever I can. Between work and homework, I do what I can with the pick-up games,” said Steve Cook, a senior from Blackfoot, Idaho.

The art of pick-up basketball games is perfected at the Hart Building, as many students gather, some several times a week, to play basketball.

Students are able to come to the gym and play with friends, or join other groups.

“Usually, I’ll come with friends,” said Jason Cook, a junior from Idaho Falls, who came with his cousin. “Usually, there are some people here.”

“We’re just one-on-one-ing it [tonight], because all of our other buddies couldn’t make it,” Cook said.

Saturday morning is definitely the most popular time to come to the Hart Building to play basketball. Although it is not as crowded, other evenings do see some pick-up games.

Although the schedule may change from week to week depending on activities taking place in the Hart, usually the basketball courts are available after 7:30 p.m. each evening, according to Hart Building employee, Roberto Bronner, a senior from Curitiba, Brazil.

Students who want to play just for fun need not worry; some of the people participating in the games are not there solely for competition.

As the long Rexburg winter approaches, getting used to playing inside could be a good investment of time.
