Some people have commitment issues; they don’t want to become too involved and get tied down. What they don’t realize is that if they don’t jump on the campus activities train, they will get left behind.
BYU-Idaho offers several opportunities and organizations for students to get involved, many of which are student-led.
“The more you can experience, the better your education will be,” said Devin Shaum, director of the Activities Program.
“Life. Change. Experience. All three are waiting for you,” is the motto of the Activities Program. This vast program is a good place to start getting involved on campus.
The BYU-I Activities’ Web site has four different silos, which contain the categories of Arts, Enrichment, Physical, and Social. Explore the Activities’ Web site to find activities of interest. There are also leadership positions available in each of the categories.
Also, check out the Student Activities Update e-mails that are sent each week. In those e-mails a wide range of organizations advertise available leadership positions for help that they need.
Clubs that relate to each major are also available. Teachers often know about groups that relate to certain fields such as SIFE for business majors and AAF for advertising majors.
Students around campus are another good source for finding out about opportunities for involvement. Talk to roommates and Home Evening groups about ways that they have been involved in the past.
“It’s more than just about getting involved. It’s about getting practical learning experience while at college,” Shaum said.
