Galley workers get their hands dirty to keep things clean

With nearly 1,500 people eating at The Galley daily, the challenge of keeping it clean could be quite intimidating, even for the world’s greatest mom. Luckily The Galley crew is here to fill mom’s shoes.

Steve Whitfield, Galley supervisor, said it takes a lot of work to keep the place clean.

“It’s a constant process. There are 125 student employees working to keep it clean. We are the largest food service on this side of the state, so we need to keep it clean,” he said.

The cleaning crew consists of 17 students who are hired to come in each night after The Galley closes. With all of them working together this job can take up to 3 hours. Even though there is a cleaning crew, Whitfield said everybody who works at The Galley throughout the day pitches in to keep it clean.

The health department has always been impressed with The Galley and given them high marks ranging between 95 - 100 percent, which is above average for other restaurants in Rexburg.

Some people may think that cleaning The Galley would not be fun, but this is not the case.It has been a positive environment for everybody who works there and when the crew has good chemistry, it’s an enjoyable experience, Whitfield explained.

“It’s definitely been enjoyable. The only thing that I don’t find enjoyable is that we are required to work on Sundays. It’s a wonderful environment and they all hold the same standards as me,” said Brandy Dipman, a sophomore from Sedalia, Mo.

Along with it being a great working environment it also could help you out if you are struggling to find an eternal mate. The cleaning crew might be where he or she is.

Whitfield said that many engagements and marriages have come from The Galley because the students are working so closely together and having fun.

So next time you are in The Galley, notice how clean it actually is. Maybe say thank you to the person that comes to clean the table next to you.
