Most of us remember the classic line from favorite stories of our childhood.
Storytelling is back this fall in the form of the Snake River Storytelling Festival: A Patchwork of Voices, which will premiere as a three-day event Sept. 15-17.
The festival will be held at the Teton Lodge on the 15th, Idaho Falls the 16th and at the Rexburg Tabernalce the 17th.
Storytelling workshops begin at 2 p.m. Saturday on campus for $10 and the storytelling starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Rexburg Tabernacle.
Tickets are $3 in advance and $4 at the door.
The festival is family friendly with stories told especially for the younger audience in mind as well as stories for students and adults. Professional storytellers from around surrounding states will be coming to share their experiences.
The Snake River Storytelling Festival was co-developed by theater faculty member Omar Hanson, who hopes to continue the tradition of storytelling that can teach and uplift as well as tie the community together.
Hanson believes in the power of teaching through stories and passing knowledge down to different generations, as well as finding a way to connect people though similar experiences.
These sentiments are shared by the students Hanson teaches in the Reader’s Theater class at BYU-I.
“We remember stories from our families; we remember stories from our childhood. These stories help us find meaning, find identity in our lives, who we are and what we stand for,” said Tyler Jessup, a senior from Beaver, Utah.
These students are also looking forward to pitching in and helping with the festival and hoping to learn something as well.
“Some of these storytellers are hilarious, so funny to listen to. It’s quite entertaining and I think it would be nice for people to go so maybe it would spark interest in them. It’s a new thing people should experience, see if it’s something they like,” said Clay Cammack, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz.
