Celebrities, TV spotlight and free merchandise - for two lucky BYU-Idaho students, it was the chance of a lifetime.s
Chelsi Davis, a junior from Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Darcy Anderson, a senior from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, went to New York City Aug. 20 for Anderson’s annual weeklong birthday vacation.
As an added surprise for her daughter, Barbara Anderson e-mailed the “Total Request Live” offices at MTV asking for tickets for her daughter’s birthday.
In most cases, these audience tickets are sold out months ahead of time, but in a twist of luck Barbara secured two
tickets for Davis and Anderson.
The day of the event, while Davis and Anderson were standing in a hallway, the casting director came out to pick people to give shout-outs.
Since the casting director himself hailed from Idaho, both girls were picked to give a shout-out to Rexburg.
The casting director also announced that they were going to have a contest for a VMA prize package worth over $27,000. The contest included making a VMA moon man statue out of clay in 30 minutes.
The casting director picked Davis as a contestant, who creatively re-vamped the moon man to include a potato in his right hand to represent Idaho. The audience voted with applause for each contestant and Davis received the loudest.
“Oh my gosh, I think I just won, I thought. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I never win anything! I just won so much stuff!” Davis said.
Among some of the prizes Davis walked away with were an i-Pod shuffle, valued at $300, BOSE headphones at $149, a Dooney and Borke duffle bag for $450, a Gap duffel bag priced at $170, a T3 blow dryer and curling iron lined with crystals for $340 and $320, a pair of shoes by Karen Rose for $400 and 100 free songs for her i-Pod shuffle from Apple i-tunes.
While Davis was busy making her prize winning moon man, Anderson had her own time in the lime light giving her enthusiastic shout-out to everyone at BYU-Idaho.
In addition to being on live television Davis and Anderson got to meet a few celebrities like Nick Cannon as well as Ashlee Simpson and Steven Strait, both starring in the up coming movie “Undiscovered.”
With celebrity run-ins and free loot from MTV, Davis and Anderson turned an exciting trip to New York City into the greatest event of their summer.
“We did a lot of shopping, but clothes don’t last forever and fake designer handbags don’t last forever. But the memories we made together [that] bonded us as good friends we’ll always remember. It was really a great time,” Anderson said.
