The Idaho Commission on the Arts is seeking submissions from its public for the design of its quarter, which is scheduled to come out in 2007.

No need to feel artfully inclined because this is a narrative competition. Submissions are text — 150 words or less — describing the perfect Idaho quarter design.

Barbara Robinson, the artist services director of the Idaho Commission on the Arts, and the one who leads the project, said she has had fun with the competition so far and noted how interested Idahoans were in the design of their quarter. She said Idaho has such diverse geography and features that the final decision will be difficult but interesting.

There have been submissions adamantly for and against having a potato in the design.

The commission encourages the design to focus on significant state icons, buildings, plants, etc., and was told by the governor to stress simplicity in its design — no clutter.

So far, there have been close to three hundred submissions, Robinson said.

Students can check out www.arts.idaho.gov/quarter for submission guidelines. The deadline is Sept. 9.
