Singer/Songwriter Guild has recently changed its name to Music Outlet. However, despite the name change, no other obvious changes pertaining to the structure of the group are planned.

Music Outlet is a group of individuals who meet together to share and enjoy one another’s musical talents. The group’s main purpose is to “provide a place for people to come and express themselves through music in a friendly and inviting atmosphere,” said Ben Bowman, a senior from Manteca, Calif., who is currently running the group.

Showing up is the only thing required to take part in the experience. Music Outlet welcomes a variety of instruments as well. “We’ve had everything from a person that played an oboe to a person that played the drums and sang,” Bowman said. Music Outlet allows a person to “hear people’s souls and experience unfiltered, raw emotion,” Bowman said when asked about his favorite part of being involved in Music Outlet.

Tiffany Moss, a senior from Idaho Falls, is a member of the focus group that helped implement the name change. When asked why the group changed their name, she said the group wanted a name that was recognized as an original group found only on BYU-Idaho’s campus, rather than a name that falsely denoted that it was a group present on other campuses.

Bowman said they needed a name that would stand on its own. The group wanted the new name to be permanent and to be able to carry itself. They also wanted a name that would provide a common knowledge of who and what they are. Bowman believes that the name change will bring better recognition throughout the campus.

All are welcome to come and share their talents or simply just come and listen. Also, anyone that wishes to be on the Music Outlet committee can do so by staying after. “Every time I come I’m glad I have the privilege to hear and play with the talent that’s there,” Bowman said. Music Outlet meets Monday nights from 9 to 10 in room 248 of the Snow Recital Hall.
