Interested in technology? Interested in the arts? Technology and music have combined to accommodate listening and creative pleasure. There are many tools and programs that offer the opportunity to create music, listen to music and personalize items.

One item available is the iPod. The iPod is a small and convenient way to take music anywhere. A person can download songs, picking the kind of music that he or she is interested in. In the BYU-Idaho Bookstore, three different styles of iPods are available — a 20GB, a 4GB and a 1GB. There are also opportunities to get a free iPod by going to www.freeipodinfo.com.

A new computer program called Garage Band has a library of different styles of synthetic music, from drums to piano. It is ideal for creating background music for such projects as a commercial and great for creating radio media.

“Garage Band is great for broadcasting. It is really user friendly and has a wide variety of different styles of music. That way a person can really pick and choose what he or she wants to do with it,” said Xolani Radebe, a sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa.

Another computer program called Finale is designed to help composers. A person can compose music on a digital piano, and with the help of Finale, print the notes on staff paper. Finale, Garage Band and iPods can all be purchased at the BYU-I Bookstore or by visiting www.apple.com.

“If a student buys software in the bookstore, there is a huge advantage with academic pricing. Garage Band is normally $79, but for students we sell for $45 in the bookstore. Also with Finale, normally $790, it is $350 in the bookstore. We try to be really accommodating for the students,” said Jennifer Hill, the technology buyer for the BYU-Idaho Bookstore.

There are also Web sites available for buying items to express oneself through technology. One Web site is www.trinkies.com, where there is the opportunity to buy accessories for a cell phone. They offer items such as antenna rings, and also customize orders if desired. At www.zingy.com or www.jamster.com, there are also different cell phone rings available for downloading.
