As technology has grown at a rapid rate, more options have become available. Choices are available for information regarding millions of job opportunities with a simple click of the mouse or a gentle touch of a key. Many occupation gateways are available at Web sites on the Internet and many offer arrays, varieties and treasure troves of good fortune for those in search of a profession.
Every Web site is unique and every Web site serves a purpose. Different sites offer various opportunities, information, guidelines and career listings, ranging from permanent employment to seasonal positions.
In dealing with seasonal positions, the Internet can be a great tool to utilize. Many summer employment Web sites are available with vast amounts of job listings and other useful features.
Imagine a summer creating lasting memories in Ireland, working at a family-owned restaurant and inn or else participating in the science field in Florida. Jobs such as the ones mentioned above can be searched by keywords, location or by present top jobs at, www.summerjobs.com/index.com, where you’re able to post a résumé for employers to view, all for the price of nothing.
Another Web site with vast opportunities is www.coolworks.com, where jobs are posted not only by summer positions, but also for other seasons. Most jobs deal with “the great outdoors.”
Beyond seasonal jobs, careers may or may not lie ahead for some. But again, many useful Web sites are available. An actual Web site created at BYU-Idaho and currently being used by 14,747 students is www.byui.edu/ycareers.
“This Web site has proven to be very helpful and useful. In fact [BYU-I] is trying to team up with BYU in Provo, BYU-Hawaii and the LDS Business College, so [Ycareers] can be offered to more students,” Robert C. Maxfield, director of career placement, said.
“[Ycareers] has proved to be a pretty good program . . . it has been really interesting.” Chelsea Defriez, a senior from Caldwell, Idaho, said.
The site offers and includes many different positive factors. The definition of Ycareers as stated by the site is, “Ycareers is an online database that connects employers and potential employees. It provides a forum where employers post available positions and jobs. Seekers may search those positions, submit application materials, and sign up for interview opportunities.”
“There is a lot of information on employers and what it would be like to work for them and things like that. It is really neat. I like that.” Defriez said.
Students who participate and use Ycareers will find jobs posted online which allows them to apply and search for jobs from the convenience of a home computer. Other opportunities offered by Ycareers include a quick guide, a training presentation on how to use the site and inserting a résumé onto the site.
Many other Web sites are available for those searching for jobs, such as www.monster.com. It offers probabilities such as searching hundreds of thousands of jobs and applying online, networking with millions of people and being introduced to all the right people and career advice as stated by the Web site. Also, experts are available to help write award-winning résumés.
Utilizing Web sites not only proves to be convenient, but also networking with teachers, family and friends seems to be a method that is growing steadily and is also very beneficial in launching a career.
“Teachers have and are always willing to give a heads up on careers,” Defriez said.
According to Maxwell, surveys have shown that networking is a useful way to jump-start a career.
Whether or not a career is launched by means of the many Web sites available or through networking, both prove to be very useful. Many resources are available at BYU-I, so why not take advantage of all the opportunities to gain new and valuable experiences.
