| The ancient worlds’ wedding customs |
Getting married in ancient times was somewhat easier than now. The man either had to kidnap a woman or pay her father a small fee. Ancient traditions carry on to this day.
• Tying the knot- In ancient Rome, the bride would wear a girdle which the groom would have to untie.
• Bridesmaids- In order to avoid a curse from demons or a former suitor the couple’s friends would all dress like the bride and groom in order to confuse the curser. Today attendants dressing alike has become a formality.
• The receiving line- It was thought that the bride and groom were blessed. By touching the bride and groom people gained good luck.
