Mary Kay: selling makeup, enriching women’s lives

Make-up.

This wonder product has been known to inflate the self-esteem of users for centuries.
“For a lot of girls, [Mary Kay products] would give them self-esteem because they were being pampered,” Shaylyn McPherson from Tremonton, Utah and a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant, said.

Mary Kay company employs close to 100,000 beauty consultants in the world.

“More than 950,000 Mary Kay independent beauty consultants and independent sales directors [are employed] in 33 countries worldwide,” according to www.marykay.com.

Not only does it have many beauty consultants worldwide, the company strives to enrich women’s lives.

“Mary Kay ... is committed to enrich women’s lives,” according to its Web site. “Where ... work is more than a business — it’s a passion and a lifestyle.”

The company also provides a management ladder that beauty consultants can climb.
“The avenues of income in the Mary Kay business opportunity are numerous,” according to their Web site. “[One] is free to advance to the level of success ... at your own pace.”

McPherson has been a beauty consultant for Mary Kay for four months and has started offering products.

“I signed up on the Internet,” she said. “There is a $100 start-up fee and it comes with a box of information with pamphlets.”

Similarly, one BYU-Idaho student thought it would be fun to give makeovers to roommates.

“The reason I became a beauty consultant was because I thought it would be fun to do facials and stuff,” Elizabeth Oldham, a junior from Ashton, Idaho, said.

Oldham feels like she has helped girls feel better about themselves.

“I felt like the [Mary Kay] products really helped the girls,” Oldham said.

Oldham has even given pre-dance facials to roommates and others before formal dances.

“I did my roommate’s faces before formal dances and other things,” she said, “They [all] really liked the end results of the facials I gave them.”
