Mothers Weekend is the time for mothers of all students to come and get a glimpse into the lives of their children for a weekend.
The theme of this years Mothers Weekend is No ordinary cause, Morgan Anne Green, a senior from Layton, Utah, and the student director over AWS, said.
The theme was picked by the Associated Women Students board.
We get together as the AWS and brainstorm for ideas, Green said. We pick the top ideas and vote to decide the theme for this years Mothers Weekend.
The theme comes from President Gordon B. Hinckleys talk given in a conference address in October 1989.
In his talk, President Hinckley spoke of the responsibilities each individual has as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
If each of us does not do well that which is his or hers to do, then there is a flaw in the entire pattern. ... But if each of us does well his or her part, then there is strength and beauty, President Hinckley said in the Sunday morning session of the October 1989 conference.
I need not remind you that this cause in which we are engaged is not an ordinary cause. It is the cause of Christ. It is the kingdom of God our eternal Father. It is the building of Zion on the earth, the fulfillment of prophecy given of old and of a vision revealed in this dispensation, President Hinckley said.
The purpose of Mothers Weekend is to strengthen existing relationships with their mothers by experiencing a weekend of college life together, according to the 2003 Mothers Weekend pamphlet. A variety of activities are provided to help enrich this relationship but are not intended to be the main focus of Mothers Weekend.
The activities start on Friday with a temple trip for those who are endowed.
Those wishing to go on the temple trip need to sign up before 5 p.m. on Friday.
Other activities on Friday range from doing a service project to attending concerts or open houses.
President David A. and Sister Susan Bednar will welcome the mothers at 2 p.m. in the Taylor Chapel.
Activities occur at night as well. Extravadance, the Tellers and Troubadours and a Lip Sync dance are available to participate in Friday night.
Saturday there will be a variety of activities scheduled.
A mother/daughter buffet and a mother/son buffet are offered at 12:45 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. respectively.
There will be two shows featuring Michael McLean and Friends at 3 and 7:30 p.m. in the Hart Auditorium.
On Sunday, there is a special Mothers Weekend fireside featuring guest speaker Sister Irma Anderson.
Mothers are invited to come any time during that period and see for themselves what the Spirit of Ricks is all about, according to the Mothers Weekend Web site.
