"The message of our film...is the spirit of freedom, ignite the spirit of freedom worldwide," Southam said. "Everyone loves freedom, even and perhaps especially people who are not in governments that espouse freedom and democracy, they still love this idea because our souls long to be free."

An LDS filmmaker is in the final days of a Kickstarter campaign to fund the first Book of Mormon war epic film in the history of filmmaking.

"Reign of Judges: Title of Liberty," is a period action film like Braveheart, set in the 73 B.C Pre-Columbian New World," Darin Southam, filmmaker and creator the concept film Reign of Judges: Title of Liberty, told BYU-Idaho Radio. "A humble soldier rises unexpectedly as the protector of a young republic, now chief captain of a war-wearied nation, Moroni defends his country with revolutionary prowess, but his greatest challenge will be uniting a beleaguered people."

The film begins in the childhood of Captain Moroni and follows the Nephite general through his adulthood until the iconic scene where the Book of Mormon hero hoists the Title of Liberty in an effort to unite his people, something Southam says, is desperately needed in today's society.

"Moroni was able to captivate and bridle a wayward nation under the tenets of liberty, his great Title of Liberty," Southam said. "I thought 'Gosh if we can do that today...that could buy us some serious time.' If Captain Moroni could do it, why couldn't we do it today, with Captain Moroni?"

Rather than taking a solely religious approach to his faith-based film, Southam says freedom is the central theme of the concept film.

"The message of our film...is the spirit of freedom, ignite the spirit of freedom worldwide," Southam said. "Everyone loves freedom, even and perhaps especially people who are not in governments that espouse freedom and democracy, they still love this idea because our souls long to be free."

Southam says the first step in creating the film will be to raise $150,000 to produce a shortened concept film by April 2018. By September 6 with just eight days left in the campaign, the film's Kickstarter has raised over $108,000.

"This is a really a clarion call for all those who have waited so many years for the first Book of Mormon war epic ever," Southam said. "This is it, this is our only chance. I really hope people understand how important it is...if our campaign is successful, it really, it will open the door for the first Book of Mormon war epic ever. However, if it is not, our campaign will be used forever as the reason for any investor not to invest in a Book of Mormon epic."
